Heir is the story of a man who has an ugly secret he’s hiding from his son, who accompanies him on a weekend trip to visit a man the father claims is an old friend.

I’m not sure there’s much better in an indie horror flick than the combination of Bill Oberst, Jr. and Robert Nolan.  The two have film resumes that rival those of anyone in the industry and they bring a charm to a project that can’t be taught.

Writer/director Richard Powell and producer Zach Green put the cherry on top of their body horror trilogy with this one.  Worm and Familiar were fantastic shorts that truly made skin crawl (while skin tore and mutated on camera) but Heir manages to up the creep level significantly as the short starts off with an email conversation between a father named Gordon (Nolan) and an online person that we soon learn is Denis, an old friend of Gordon’s played by Oberst.  The email subject line is “My Son” and if that gives you the heebie jeebies of things to come, well then you know how Powell and Green operate as filmmakers.

While the story is a bit under-developed (what exactly is going on with Nolan and Oberst?), the film does not lack in suspense and crisp dialogue that makes this an award-winning short. The pay off at the end isn’t the best ever- personally, I would have rather never seen what monster lurks in the darkness- but again, we’re nitpicking here.  The film is saturated in creepy sexual metaphors and oozing with a stomach churning sense of dread.

Heir may be the end of this short film trilogy by Powell and Green but very well could be the beginning of a big career for both gentlemen as they hopefully dig into the world of feature length films.
